From Cascarrafa travel south, then east in the direction of the ‘U’ shaped rock formation where the Gogoat and Skiddo spawn. His message was the antithesis to the glamour of the rock and roll lifestyle. Yes, many artists sang of the downside of drugs before and after Dirt, but Staley’s delivery was straight from the bones. His mental and physical despair was projected not just by his lyrics, but by the often torturous way he sang them as well.

  • The band took its name from Staley’s previous group, the glam metal band Alice N’ Chains.

This concept is all the more sombre when considering he didn’t lose his battle with heroin for another ten years after the album’s release. I wasn’t privvy to the themes of drug abuse then, but it still proved a cathartic listen when I purchased the album (one of the first I ever bought to my memory) with allowance after hearing singles on the radio. From the opening shout on “Them Bones” to the final, fierce notes of “Would?

A SCENE IN RETROSPECT: Alice In Chains – “Dirt”

Riffs will be heavy, but vocals will be really sloppy and wavery, or they’ll be too light and the vocals… What revives the album from this stumble is the infamous “Angry Chair”. Here, the riffs, the melodies, and the lyrics all compliment each other, giving what is smack in the dirt an almost vicious air. Concluding this comes “Would?”, a song that though not recorded along with the rest of the album, captures the vibe of the first side, taking it suddenly up-tempo. On each of the verses, the haunting dual attack of the Stayley/Cantrell team just takes you away.So in conclusion, this album solidifies AiC’s quality as a band.

Which Starter Pokemon To Pick?

The muddy and quick-sand feeling that ‘Junkhead’ incites further attests to the disconcerting content of the album. ‘Dirt’ is where Staley bares himself and confesses his dejected state. It is clearly one of the most painful tracks crafted by any band, where the lyrics are self-defecating and the exotic tinge makes the message of the song more brooding. Despite these songs, there is a fair mix of tuneful and potently strong tracks amidst the muddle. ‘Them Bones’ and ‘Dam That River’ are chugging classics with mixes the band’s heavy edge with mainstream elements and catchy vocal performances. ‘Rooster’ is a touching ode to Jerry Cantrell’s father who fought in Vietnam.

Climb on top of the rock formation and check the metal crates with the L shape, and the TM will be there. Travel to Cascarrafa and head north towards the Asado Desert. Once there, keep heading straight until hitting the small circular rock formation rising from the sand. On top of a cliff in this rock formation, players will find the TM.
