Sexuality is a deep aspect within all of us. And the question of what a “healthy sex life” looks like is more widely explored and questioned every day. My curiosity led me to explore awakening intimacy: Ayurvedic Wisdom for Better Sex.
Sex is our creative life force in action, our sacred expression, and one of our deepest, most primal needs. The importance of guiding this energy is vital to our existence. This is why Ayuveda actually considers sex as one of the 3 Pillars of Life, after food and sleep. Food, Sleep, and Sex.
SEX ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA
According to Ayurveda, sex is a natural expression of the essence of who we are.
Because of this, it is vitally important for us to stay connected to our sensual nature, understand, and explore our own sexuality and deepen our relationships with ourselves, our partners, and the world.
In Ayurveda, sex is not only viewed as a physical act, but as a sacred union between two bodies, minds, and souls. It is a natural urge that shouldn’t be resisted. This ancient wisdom even states that if our sexual instincts are suppressed, it will negatively affect our mental health and result in dis-ease in the body. Intimacy plays an important role in our overall health and wellbeing.
AWAKENING OUR INTIMACY
So how can we awaken our intimacy? Ayurvedic Wisdom for Better Sex. How to deepen our sexual experiences based on the wisdom of Ayurveda?
Set the Mood
To fully set the scene and enliven our sexual energy, all 5 of our senses should be engaged. The environment, such as food, lighting, touch, music, and scents, all play an important role in building an intimate atmosphere.
Mindfulness Matters
It’s wise to approach sex and intimacy as a form of nourishment and as an opportunity for a deep connection with your partner.
In today’s world, sexual energy is treated casually by many. Yet according to Ayurveda, this powerful, sacred practice is to be performed with someone you know deeply and who you love, respect, and share similar values.
Ayurveda recommends intimacy only when we are truly engaged with our partners; in mind, body, and soul. A genuine, mutual interest in sex must be present. Here, there is no room for obliging another, for faking it, or pleasing another if our own pleasure isn’t being valued.
Nourish your Body
Ayurveda believes that our vital energy, Ojas, is depleted during orgasm. So it’s important you also take care of yourself after sex; nourishing yourself to regain your vitalizing, creative, inspirational, and magnetic energy.
According to Ayurveda, specific foods and drinks help to rebuild this sexual energy include ghee, rice pudding, coconut water, bone broth, sugar cane, and warm milk (especially cow, but goat and almond are also good substitutes).
Timing is Everything
From the aspect of the doshas, the ideal time for sex is between 10pm and 11pm. Before 10pm is Kapha time, and we are grounded and relaxed. But at 10pm Pitta time begins, bringing passion and fire into the atmosphere and also within our bodies.
Additionally, by 10pm our dinner should be well-digested. For the same reason we wouldn’t want to practice yoga on a full stomach, nothing ruins the mood more than discomfort from a full belly. It’s suggested to wait 2-3 hours after eating before getting frisky with your partner.
Follow the Seasons
The body is at its prime during winter, so feel free to indulge in pleasurable acts every day if you choose! In spring and fall, stamina is more moderate, so it’s wise to be intimate less often; every few days. In the summertime, our energy is at its lowest, so sexual frequency should be reduced to every other week, according to Ayurveda.
INTIMACY ACCORDING TO YOUR DOSHA
KAPHAS
In general, Kaphas tend not enjoy being intimate as often. However, they do have a lot of stamina! So when they are intimate, enjoy a long-lasting experience. Kaphas also respond favorably to tastes and smells. So get out your YouVeda Essential Oils and allow your pheromones to take charge, igniting the mood.
PITTAS
Pittas tend to enjoy very intense intimacy. They have a fiery passion and fire in life, so this shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Pittas are also more visually stimulated. So feel free to keep the lights on, light some candles, and allow them to enjoy you in all your natural beauty.
VATAS
Vatas love novelty! They enjoy mixing it up, being spontaneous, and getting creative in the bedroom. It’s wise for Vatas not to stick to a specific routine.
Vatas respond deeply to sound and touch. So whisper sweet nothings into their ears, sing to them, and seduce them with your words. Add a massage in or conscious touch for an added bonus!
Sex is like a magical tool in Ayurveda. The expectation of pleasure, a passion that’s pure, permission to play with life and enjoy this world where we have chosen to journey.
As Vasant Lad writes in Fundamental Principles of Ayurveda, “When two people truly love each other and, within that loving relationship, they make love with awareness, they can transform ojas (vital energy) into profound bliss.”
I wish this article Awakening your Intimacy: Ayurvedic Wisdom for better sex helps and may wisdom be a magic tool within your life… here to enhance, heal, and transform you while bringing you closer to yourself and the ones you love.
