Today’s Meditation – Visualizing the digestive process
Instructions:
Hello, and welcome! The digestive process seems very complicated and mysterious to most people. However, it’s quite simple to understand once you break it down. Today I will lead you through a visualization of the digestive process.
Take a few moments to get as comfortable as possible, and allow your eyes to close…
Start by visualizing a meal before you. Picture your very favorite meal, if you’d like. Take a few moments to create the setting in your mind…
Now, imagine that you’re ready to take your first bite. Picture yourself spooning, forking, or grabbing a bit of food…bringing it up to your lips…and putting it in your mouth…Â
When food touches your salivary glands, saliva is produced. Saliva helps break down food, and it also lubricates the esophagus.
As you begin chewing, the saliva continues to do its work. Picture all of the muscles in the jaw as you chew…as well as your teeth…and tongue.
Visualize yourself swallowing, now…letting the thoroughly-chewed food move down past the throat…gently being pushed down with the muscles of the esophagus…
Your food has now reached your stomach. This is where acid and enzymes, as well as the strong muscles of the stomach, begin to break it down even further.
Envision your food making the journey to the small intestine, now, where nutrients are absorbed…Â
Imagine your food moving along to the large intestine, now. Also known as the colon. This is the final part of the digestive system, where any undigested food is eliminated from the body through the rectum.
Take a few moments to visualize the digestive system as a whole, now…appreciating the wonderful process of digestion. Knowing that it enables you to eat, absorb nutrients, and have energy.
When you are ready to end this meditation, you may open your eyes and come back to your surroundings.
