Physical traits

You are naturally “small boned” and don’t gain weight easily.

Your joints are prominent and tend to crack often. Your skin, hair and nails are generally dry and your skin is fairly thin.

You rarely sweat and are always looking for that blanket or extra layer of clothing to keep you warm! As a Vata, you tend to suffer from bloating, gas and/ or constipation and your appetite is irregular.

Some days you eat a lot and others you go most of the day without eating!

 You are always on the move and are naturally creative!! You love the arts, literature, philosophy, and anything that allows your creative juices to begin flowing.

You are always thinking about the next big thing and get bored easily if you are in one place too long. Maybe you are constantly jumping from one idea to the next. Your enthusiasm is contagious though, and you are often on the move, open to the next adventure! You are prone to feeling ‘wired’, stressed, and may feel tired come late afternoon.

Despite not having a great memory, you are quick to learn, are naturally perceptive, and happiest when in contact with nature and the outdoors.

FINDING YOUR BALANCE!

So now that you know more about yourself as a Vata, how can you bring on the balance that will help you become more physically healthy? Avoid digestive problems? Get a good night’s sleep?

Nourishing Your BODY
TIP #1: COOK YOUR VEGETABLES

As a Vatas, your body and digestion do best when eating your vegetables COOKED, simply because they are easier for you to digest. Raw vegetables are dry, rough, and cold, which can irritate your digestion, causing discomfort, and may prevent you from soaking up all the amazing nutrients you are feeding yourself.

Remember that Vatas have “air” qualities (dry, rough, cold), so you want OPPOSITE qualities in your food/life to create the BALANCE your health needs. Cooking your vegetables softens, warms, and smoothes them. This allows greater EASE in digesting, resting your gut, so you can fully soak up all the nutrients little to no discomfort.

**ROOT VEGETABLES are especially good for Vatas because of their grounding qualities!

Settling Your MIND
TIP #2: SLOW DOWN!

Vatas tend to go into overdrive which can lead to burnout. Consciously taking the time to slow down is real medicine for you.

By following these practices, you’ll feel less affected by stress and anxiety in your day-to-day life and experience much more peace and harmony!

GROUNDING practices… are especially beneficial for you, such as:

  • Grounding meditations - learning and practicing maintaining focus and quieting the mind.
  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Yoga - helps you gain awareness and begin to take things slower
  • Affirmations and Mantras - “I am safe.” “I am connected to the Earth.” “I am secure in my body and environment.”
  • Everyday tasks such as cleaning, mowing the lawn, and doing laundry are nourishing for Vatas
  • Get outside! Lay on the grass, walking barefoot and gardening are all effective ways of regaining balance and ground with nature.

Set LIMITS
TIP #3: STRUCTURE IS KEY!

For Vatas, it can be challenging to stay motivated, to finish projects, or to achieve goals since your mind can wander all over the place. You may love to multi-task and often find yourself multiple roles at the same time. Structure is your friend here to regain that balance.

Set limits on your time. Shorter periods of structure and tasks will allow you to be more productive overall!

Discipline is a MUST
TIP #4: CREATE A SET SCHEDULE TO FOLLOW

Here is a Simple DAILY ROUTINE to help to you THRIVE as a Vata:

  • Wake up around the same time every day (ideally at dawn)
  • Practice morning routine -- i.e. eliminate, tongue scrape, brush teeth, wash face, oil pull with sesame oil, journal
  • Drink a hot cup of warming tea (with lemon and ginger) and meditate
  • Eat a warm breakfast, such as cooked grains with almond milk and cinnamon
  • Begin your day in a peaceful manner (off technology for at least the first 30 minutes after waking)
  • Eat lunch around the same time every day. No snacking (1 snack in the afternoon) unless you’re hungry.
  • Exercise in the afternoon when your energy levels are up.
  • Eat an early, easy -to-digest dinner like vegetable stew.
  • Enjoy a nightly warm tonic like turmeric golden mylk.
  • Oil your body with sesame oil, and turn off all technology
  • Get to sleep soundly by 10pm

**Vatas tend to be light sleepers. You might fall asleep early and then be up buzzing around from 2-4am. Creating a bedtime ritual keeps you on track. (Ear plugs, eye pillows, lavender, and a sleep machine may be amazing ways to set the tone for a solid night’s sleep.)

Thriving SOCIALLY

Socially, plans may come and go. You LOVE the exciting rush of an adventure, you are oozing with creativity, and spontaneous ideas pop into your head that you feel inspired to explore.

TIP #5: GO FOR IT!!
  • You enjoy the MOST out of life when you follow your heart and your intuition.
  • Book that trip
  • Grab some friends to go on that hike with
  • Begin writing that book you’ve been dreaming about.
  • Allow your creative magic to flow.
THIS is the GIFT that YOU as a Vata bring to the world!

Stay GROUNDED

TIP #6: HONOR YOURSELF

The sky is the limit with you! However your energy waxes and wanes. Too much stimulus, such as loud noises or a crowded party, may feel overwhelming at times. While activity may be fun on occasion, be sure to balance it out with a warming ginger bath or an oil massage, rest, and give yourself permission to take a time out when you’re feeling it. Listen to your body and notice how you are feeling in the moment.

If you had plans but are yearning for some alone time, it’s ok to cancel! Expressing your needs freely is a nurturing way to bring mind, body, and soul back into balance.
